TEACHING TINY TOTS.

Image
I respect Pre-school teachers. I really really respect them . 😥 Teaching children generally is a special ministry for the patient, creative and strong, teaching children below the age of 5 is for the greatly patient, extra creative and super strong! In the past six years, I have had to teach at different schools, churches, and organizations and you would assume my 'toughest' jobs would have been the ones that stretched my stamina during pregnancy. But as a matter of fact, the most challenging times I have faced in this Dance business, has to be the times I had to work with children of ages 3 and 4. Oh lawd!  I just have to pause and give a special shout-out to EVERYONE who teaches pre-schoolers for a living. I give y'all humongous respect!!! The thing with a three-year-old is that she does not naturally have a long attention span. This should not be an issue though, it is very NORMAL. But when you teach in a country like Nigeria, where school administrators thin...

CHOREOGRAPHER'S BLOCK!

Image
Some of us may have heard of the term - "Writer's Block", and if you have not, it is defined as the condition of being unable to to think of what to write or how to proceed with writing. Scary! Imagine you have a deadline to submit a script and you encounter this monster called 'Writer's block'! I have not necessarily been a steady scriptwriter (until now); it has not been a major demand on my profession, and even if I had to write and I get stuck, I have the most amazing script-writing mentor who ALWAYS comes through for me! (SHOUT-OUT to Mrs. Adeola Ike! God bless you real good ma!!!) But I have found that as a Dance Teacher and choreographer I do get stuck sometimes. I have a 5-minute track to work with and by the time I get to the second minute I am there looking at the mirror wondering, "Err... Okay what next?" STUCK! Worse part is I could play the track like two days later and still get stuck at the same point! It could be very frustrating but ...

OH, FOR MY SPIRIT IS WILLING BUT MY FLESH IS WEAK!

Image
Lying on the bed, awake. The mind is calculating and strategizing how it would motivate the body to get up and werk ! The body on the other hand, is crying for rest. It is wincing at every slight turn, as muscle aches are saying 'Good morning!' Should I workout this morning or just leave it for another day? Sigh... If every time I've worked out has been because I felt like it, I wouldn't be in half the shape I'm in today. At all. I've had excuses, I've had reasons, but most importantly, I've had to work through them all. Losing weight is tough. Working out is tough. It gets to a stage where your mind is even just as weak as your body - you've not been seeing enough results for your effort, you're feeling discouraged, etc. At that point, you need your spirit to keep you going. Your spirit MUST remain alive at all times. When your body *'fails', when your mind is sending negativity, you need to search the inner realms of your spirit-man ...

WHY DID YOU PUT MY DAUGHTER AT THE BACK???

Image
Some parents will not kill somebody o! As a mother of two awesome boys, I understand the need to be your children's number one Fan. I know what negativity can do to a growing child's self esteem so I don't joke with what I say to my children - I build them up, not pull them down - even before they fully understand their left from right. I must add though, that I will teach them life lessons like - YOU WILL NOT ALWAYS BE THE FRONT AND CENTRE STAR OF THE SHOW! Even if five pupils are HUGELY talented, will there be five lead actors in a school play? Or even when ten of you make first class will ten of you be made graduating class president? How then should a parent expect that their child MUST be the main dancer to take a solo part all the time? You hear things like, "We all paid the same amount for this club, so why is it my own child that is at the back?" Sometimes, I don't even know where to begin replying that parent. Defenses are flying through my head and ...
